Long Island Sound Sailboat Delivery

From New York City to Block Island — these are my home waters.

My own sailboat is moored in Setauket Harbor, on Long Island's north shore. I've sailed Long Island Sound a thousand times or more, and I've delivered boats from one end of it to the other — from New York City out to Montauk, Orient, and Block Island - and on east..

I've been in most every port on the Sound. This is not a stretch of water I know only from charts or occasional deliveries. It's my backyard, and I've spent decades sailing it.

Local knowledge makes a difference

Long Island Sound offers wonderful sailing, but it has its own challenges: changing winds, currents, busy commercial traffic, narrow approaches, and harbors that can be straightforward in daylight and less forgiving after dark. The western Sound, the central north-shore harbors, and the eastern approaches toward Block Island each have a different character.

Experience in these waters helps with planning a sensible departure, choosing a route, recognizing when conditions warrant a change of plan, and finding a suitable harbor when needed. Local familiarity doesn't replace up-to-date charts, weather, or sound seamanship — it adds to them.

Deliveries throughout the Sound

Whether you're buying a boat, moving to a new marina, changing home ports, or bringing your sailboat back after a cruise, I can discuss a delivery along the Long Island or Connecticut shore, across the Sound, or onward through the eastern approaches.

Areas I serve include:

New York City and the western Sound; the north shore of Long Island; Connecticut shoreline ports; the central and eastern Sound; and routes toward Fishers Island, Block Island, and beyond.

Every delivery is planned around the particular boat, crew, weather, and destination.

A sailor first, and a delivery captain

I'm a USCG-licensed 100-ton master and an experienced, conscientious sailor. I own a 30-foot Pearson sailboat, and I'm comfortable with traditional navigation as well as GPS and electronic charts. My goal on a delivery is simple: take good care of the boat and bring it safely to its destination.

For an owner who doesn't know the Sound, I can provide local experience. For an owner who knows it well, I can provide an extra pair of capable hands — or take responsibility for the delivery when you can't make the trip yourself.

Rates and arrangements

My current delivery rates are $520 per day for one day or less, $440 per day for two to three days, and $410 per day for four days or longer, plus expenses. Short deliveries requiring substantial travel to and from the boat may involve a charge for that time. See the FAQ on deposits and payments.

Have a boat to move on Long Island Sound?

Tell me where the boat is, where it needs to go, and a little about the vessel. I'll be glad to discuss the trip.
